Iolite is the gem-quality variety of the mineral cordierite, prized for its beautiful violet-blue colouring. One of its most fascinating features is pleochroism, meaning it can display different colours when viewed from different angles, often appearing blue, violet, grey, or even yellowish. Iolite is found in locations including India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Brazil. It has a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale and was historically used by Viking navigators, who are believed to have used thin slices of the stone to help locate the sun on cloudy days.

Please Note: The protective coating helps slow the natural tarnishing process, however the longevity of the finish will vary depending on wear, storage, skin chemistry, and exposure to moisture, perfumes, lotions, and other chemicals. As with all plated jewellery, some wear to the finish is expected over time.
